Who else but Ben & Jerry’s could make an ice cream flavor into a political movement?
The creators announced Tuesday that they will introduce a new flavor of ice cream meant to celebrate those who “resist the Trump administration’s regressive and discriminatory policies and build a future that values inclusivity, equality, and justice for people of color, women, the LGBTQ community, refugees, and immigrants,” according to a statement on the company’s website.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Pecan Resist,” seemingly a pun on “We can resist,” is a chocolate ice cream with white and dark fudge chunks, pecans, walnuts, and fudge-covered almonds, an assortment of diverse ingredients.
The flavor will be available at participating ice cream shops nationwide and on their website for just $6.99.
Ben and Jerry’s will even donate $25,000 to four nonprofit organizations who support building progressive values. Color Of Change works to end injustices holding black people back; the Women’s March empowers women to work collectively to create change; Honor the Earth advocates for renewable energy and environmental protection, and Neta is a media platform ran by people of color along the Texas-Mexico border.
The pint’s design was created by Bay Area artist and activist, Favianna Rodriguez. The canister reads, “Welcome to the resistance. Together, Pecan Resist! We honor & stand with women, immigrants, people of color, & the millions of activists and allies who are courageously resisting the President’s attack on our values, humanity & environment. We celebrate the diversity of our glorious nation & raise our spoons in solidarity for all Americans.”
Ben and Jerry’s isn’t new to using their platform to promote progressive action. In 2009, they changed their Chubby Hubby flavor to “Hubby Hubby” after same-sex marriage became legal in Vermont, where Ben & Jerry’s was founded. Chocolate Fudge Brownie also became “Food Fight Fudge Brownie” to promote GMO labeling, and EmpowerMint was made to promote equal voting rights in 2016.
