Through BeyGOOD, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Tina Lawson have launched their new campaign #IDIDMYPART, a mobile COVID-19 testing relief campaign. It will provide more than 1,000 coronavirus testing kits to local hospitals in Houston. The campaign comes one month after BeyGOOD donated $6 million to help essential workers.
In a statement, Tina Lawson said, “The virus is wreaking havoc on the black community, so we need a movement to prioritize our health. We are all in this together. But we have to look at what is happening in our black and brown communities and how they are being decimated by COVID-19. It is critical that we stay vigilant with social distancing, wearing a mask, and, most of all, getting tested. If you don’t get tested, then you don’t know if you are a carrier of the virus. Being asymptomatic is how you infect your entire household and those around you, the very people you love. We have got to go to these free testing facilities and find out our status.”
I DID MY PART will officially launch on May 8, providing mobile testing at Cullen Middle School in Houston from 10 am-5 pm. The following day, the testing will be held at Forest Brook Middle School during the same time frame. ET Canada notes that BeyGOOD will also provide protective gear (gloves, face masks), vitamins, and household supplies.
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee commented on Texas’s low testing rate.
“Testing is crucial because it helps find hot spots and saves lives. Texas has a very low COVID-19 test rate, second-lowest in the nation. This is why the commitment [of] Ms. Tina Knowles Lawson and BeyGOOD is so significant in helping Houstonians get out and get tested,” she said.
Tina Lawson challenged Tyler Perry after she and daughter Beyoncé launched their campaign. The director, in return, accepted. According to ET Canada, Tyler will establish a campaign similar to #IDIDMYPART in Atlanta later this month. Once he launches his campaign, he will then challenge another celebrity to do the same in their hometown or city.
