The Biden administration sued Texas Thursday over the recently enacted restrictive abortion law that bans abortions from as early as six weeks into pregnancy and allows anyone to sue those involved in the procedure, including a rideshare driver who drove the woman to a clinic.
“The act is clearly unconstitutional,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a briefing on Thursday.
The law went into effect last week after the supreme court refused to block it. The court claims it could not block it due to complex and “novel” procedural questions.
“This kind of scheme to nullify the Constitution of the United States is one that all Americans, whatever their politics or party, should fear,” Garland said. “If it prevails, it may become a model for action in other areas by other states.”
In a statement, Biden condemned the new law and reaffirmed the White House’s support for abortion rights.
