With the recent acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse, many of us are left even more puzzled by America’s justice system, while sadly, others aren’t surprised at all.
Rittenhouse was 17 and white on the day he fatally shot two people and injured a third. His imagery was often portrayed in the media as a young heroic American citizen who looked up to law enforcement and went out to protect the country amid the protests in Kenosha last year.
Many see the inequality in the jurors’ decisions. But some could say they saw it coming, especially after the judge over the case dismissed the possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18 charge against Rittenhouse, regardless of the fact that he was photographed carrying a gun while under the age of 18 that tragic day.
But apparently, with all the facts and blatant injustice, President Biden wants us to believe America’s “jury system works.” (Which I strongly beg to differ.)
Look, I stand by what the jury has concluded,” Biden said. “The jury system works, and we have to abide by it.”
“While the verdict in Kenosha will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned, myself included, we must acknowledge that the jury has spoken,” Biden added in his official statement.
He then told people to protest peacefully and abide by the law following the verdict.
“I urge everyone to express their views peacefully, consistent with the rule of law. Violence and destruction of property have no place in our democracy,” Biden said. “The White House and Federal authorities have been in contact with Governor Evers’s office to prepare for any outcome in this case, and I have spoken with the Governor this afternoon and offered support and any assistance needed to ensure public safety.”
Rittenhouse was found not guilty on all counts involving the shooting that killed two men–Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber–and injured Gaige Grosskreutz after he showed up with an AR-15 style rifle.
He faced multiple charges, including first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree intentional homicide, and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.
Until presidents see and admit that we have a flawed justice system, we will continue to see the blatant inequalities and injustices of those it was set out against.
This is America.
