Bill Gates says Artificial intelligence will likely replace doctors, teachers, and more professionals within the decade.

In a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” the Microsoft co-founder shared his vision of a future where AI drastically alters the landscape of work. He explained that soon, humans might not be necessary “for most things.”

During the interview, Gates discussed AI’s potential, stating, “The era we’ve come to is sort of the vision that computing was expensive and it basically became free. The era that we’re just starting is that intelligence is rare, you know, a great doctor, a great teacher. And with AI, over the next decade, that will become free. Commonplace, you know? Great medical advice, great tutoring.”

He continued, reflecting on the profound impact of AI: “It solves all these specific problems, like, we don’t have enough doctors or, you know, mental health professionals.” However, this influx of intelligence also brings uncertainty about the future of jobs.

“What will jobs be like? Should we just work like two or three days a week?” Gates pondered. He admitted, “It’s a bit scary. It’s completely new territory.”

When Fallon asked about the diminished role of humans, Gates agreed: “Not for most things.” Still, he noted, “We’ll decide” what roles humans continue to play. He cited baseball as an example, saying, “We won’t want to watch computers play baseball.” Gates also expressed optimism about the future of health innovations and climate solutions. “There’s a lot of great stuff coming along,” he said, emphasizing his hope for future breakthroughs.
