Fox News host Bill O’Reilly has lost custody of his children in a New York court ruling last week. According to the suit, the children, 13 and 17, no longer want to live with him and want to live with their mother, Maureen McPhilmy, full time.
O’Reilly and McPhilmy, who have been divorced since 2011, have been in a custody battle for nearly four years. In May 2015, a Nassau County Supreme Court granted custody of the couple’s two minor children to McPhilmy after O’Reilly’s daughter claimed to have witnessed her father dragging her mother down a staircase by her neck. She also told the court that O’Reilly was an absentee parent who was not interested in developing a relationship with her.
At the January 22 hearing, the children’s court appointed lawyer told the court that both the daughter and son strongly preferred living with their mother over O’Reilly. On February 24, the court’s four justices ruled unanimously in McPhilmy’s favor, citing “the clearly stated preferences of the children.”
Though the court ruled that McPhilmy will have sole custody of the children, O’Reilly will still be a part of decision making for the children including which schools they attend, what medical care they receive, and what religion they practice.
