Black Excellence: Black Golden Globe Winners Featuring Chadwick Boseman, John Boyega, and More

On Sunday, the Golden Globes virtually awarded its winners, and Black excellence brought home a few of those awards.

John Boyega won Best Performance by an Actor in a television supporting role for his role as Leroy Logan in Amazon’s anthology series, Small Axe. He accepted his award at his home in London while wearing track pants.

He then made sure to thank his team during his speech.

“Soul” won the best-animated motion picture award, making its co-director Kemp Powers the first Black debut filmmaker to win a Golden Globe. The movie was the first Pixar film with a Black lead character.

“Being able to tell a universal tale that explored the meaning of life through the prism of a Black man’s experiences was a special honor,” co-director Kemp Powers said in an acceptance speech during the 78th annual Golden Globes.

“And though the details are specific, I really do believe our story is universal,” he continued. “So many friends and strangers from all walks of life wrote to tell us how this film resonated with them and how grateful they were to be reminded the seemingly simple everyday moments of life are often the most important.”

Daniel Kaluuya became the fifth black performer to win a Golden Globe for his supporting actor role as Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton in Shaka King’s historical drama “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Kaluuya was able to give his acceptance speech despite the technical difficulties that persisted through the night.

“I gave everything,” Kaluuya said of his role. “And I couldn’t give it to a more noble man, than chairman Fred Hampton. I hope generations after this can see how brilliantly he thought, how brilliantly he spoke and how brilliantly he loved.”

Andra Day won Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Drama for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday.”

Lastly, the late and talented actor Chadwick Boseman for Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward accepting the award on his behalf. Her acceptance speech had many in tears. She began by saying that Chad would have given such an inspirational speech and the many actors and actresses that were very close to the actor. Ledward ended by saying that we need to celebrate those that we love.
