A fake looting story has swept the internet, leaving Black people fleeing the deadly Los Angeles fires the target of racism and possible profiling.

The situation emerged when an Instagram page known as The Chingon Conservative shared a video of several Black men moving furniture and other items from home as the blaze threatened their area. However, the MAGA-inspired page, which has over 49,000 followers, shared the image clip and accused the men of being looters. It didn’t take long for the video to find its way to Twitter, where it was shared by several other racist accounts.
Thankfully, a separate view of the news clip shows the homeowner talking with news crews about her items being moved from her home to save what she could. A popular news page, Breaking 911, also shared the story about the Black looters with its over one million Twitter followers. However, they also deleted the clip after receiving a wave of backlash.
Stop spreading false information. Nobody is looting here they were helping that woman get her belongings out of her house.

Despite the obvious misinformation, neither of these pages issued apologies for sharing the disgusting rhetoric. Ebro called out the matter on his Instagram account.
“The slander of Black people can’t even take a break for a tragedy,” he captioned the video.
While officials have confirmed that at least 20 people have been arrested for looting, the issue is not a major one compared to what the area is currently facing. The death toll of the Los Angeles area blaze has risen to 11, with thousands of homes and other structures being obliterated.
