The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) pulled out all the stops for its 4th annual BMAC Gala, held last night, September 19, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year’s event was a celebration of artists, executives, and activists who have used their influence to champion social justice and uplift their communities. Honorees included music icons Usher and LL Cool J, along with BET Media Group, Ivy McGregor, and Live Nation, all recognized for their contributions toward racial equity and positive change.

Hosted by entertainment mogul Kenny Burns, the night was filled with surprises and heartfelt moments. Celebrity presenters like Bobby Brown, Taraji P. Henson, and civil rights attorney Ben Crump took the stage to honor the accomplishments of the night’s awardees. Other notable guests in attendance included Gunna, Flavor Flav, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Evan Ross, Anthony Hamilton, Mona Scott-Young, and more.

Throughout the evening, honorees and guests reflected on the importance of continuing the fight for racial and social justice. Usher, receiving the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award from Bobby Brown, emphasized the power of using one’s platform for good: “Beyond the music, it’s about making a difference where it counts the most.” LL COOL J, accepting the Clarence Avant Trailblazer Award from Ben Crump, urged the audience to keep pushing forward: “If I can come from Queens and achieve my dreams, so can you. We must believe in the power of our own potential.”

A standout moment of the evening was when BMAC, alongside Mayor Michael Tubbs, recognized Gunna with a special commendation for his involvement in the BMAC 30349 Guaranteed Income Program. This initiative will provide 30 families in South Fulton, GA with a monthly stipend of $1,000, aiming to alleviate financial burdens and create a sustainable future for those in need. Gunna, moved by the honor, shared his commitment to uplifting his community: “I’m here to make sure my people thrive. This program is going to change lives.”

The gala was more than just a night of celebration—it was a testament to the transformative power of music and advocacy. Willie “Prophet” Stiggers, BMAC’s co-founder and CEO, spoke passionately about the organization’s mission: “The BMAC Gala is not about awards and accolades; it’s about highlighting those who are making real, tangible change. When others are silent, we are amplifying the call for justice and equality.”

Leading up to the gala, BMAC hosted a series of events, including the Black.Future.Now. Brunch and a conversation on the implications of AI in the music industry. The week concluded with a breakfast honoring the organization’s partnership with Neil Lasher, focused on supporting sobriety within the music community.

Since its founding in 2020, BMAC has been at the forefront of promoting racial equity and economic justice. Their initiatives range from guaranteed income programs to advocacy for policy changes such as the RAP Act and the CREATE Art Act. Through these efforts, BMAC is not only holding the music industry accountable but also paving the way for the next generation of Black creatives.

With a board that includes influential figures like Caron Veazey, Ashaunna Ayars, and Jamil Davis, and an advisory board featuring legends such as Quincy Jones and the late Clarence Avant, BMAC is set to continue its impactful work for years to come. The 2024 BMAC Gala, produced by Donna Grecco for Primary Wave and Rikki Hughes for Magic Lemonade, was made possible by Live Nation and partner Variety.
