Independent bookstores have long been an oasis for discovering and showcasing lesser-known titles. For Black authors and readers, Black-owned stores represent a for us, by us approach catering to literature enthusiasts of color.
Many of these locations carry texts by Black storytellers, some of which are self-published. Holding such books on their shelves has provided a forum for these authors to showcase their talents, guaranteeing that diverse voices and perspectives remain in a world filled with countless publications. Community events, such as the Blk Book Swap, traditionally held at Black-owned bookstores, including Cafe Con Libros in Brooklyn, New York, also offer a sense of community.
Thanks to the internet age, several Black-owned bookstores are thriving without physical locations and instead offer digital marketplaces for writers of color. Phoenix, Arizona-based Onyx Oasis Bookstore is just one example of an online literary retailer. Founded by Tranise Robinson, this cyber platform offers all genres, focusing on stories from “Black, Indigenous, Latine(a/o/x), Asian Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and QTBIPOC writers.”
Whether you visit in person or take advantage of the store’s internet catalog, here are three of our favorite Black-owned bookstores to keep your reading list lit this summer.
