Black Panther’s Martin Freeman Says It’s Been “Strange and Sad” Filming Without Chadwick Boseman

Black Panther 2 is in production, and many of the late Chadwick Boseman‘s co-stars can agree that Black Panther feels different without the legendary actor. One of Boseman’s co-stars is coming out about filming the sequel and called it “strange and sad” without the actor.

Black Panther production confirmed it would resume after Chadwick Boseman passed away from Stage 3 colon cancer in 2018. It was a rough start to continue the film due to COVID delays, cast injuries, and figuring out which direction the film would take without the Black Panther himself.

The writer and director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, was unaware that Boseman was battling colon cancer and was actually working on the script for Boseman. After reworking the script, Coogler could rewrite the script without T’ Challa. According to co-star Martin Freeman, there were some adjustments.

Collider covered the interview.

Freeman says, “On the one hand, you’re making the film that you’re there to make, and there are scores and scores of people on set, joined in this endeavor to make the film. But there’s also no question that, at the heart of it, there’s quite a gap now, and you felt it.”

In the sequel, Martin Freeman is returning to his role, Everett Ross.

“It was odd with Chadwick [Boseman] not being there,” Freeman said. “There’s no way around that. I think everyone would find it pretty strange and sad, but at the same time, things don’t just end. It’s not like, ‘Well, that’s happened, so we just all have to go off and never do it again.’ But it was odd.”

Freeman shares that he wasn’t sure if there would be a Black Panther sequel after Boseman’s unexpected death.

“Of course, it was odd with Chadwick [Boseman] not being there. There’s no way around that. I think everyone would find it pretty strange and sad, but at the same time, life things don’t just end.”

Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever is expected to hit theaters on November 11.
