A Black student in Texas who was suspended for a month due to his dreadlocks is being sent to a disciplinary program, ultimately removing him from high school.
According to The Associated Press, Principal Lance Murphy wrote a statement that Darryl George, 18, a Barbers Hill High School junior, will attend EPIC alternative school from Oct. 12 to Nov. 29 for “failure to comply” with school rules.
Principal Murphy further stated that George repeatedly broke the “previously communicated standards of student conduct.” George can rejoin regular classes at the high school on Nov. 30 but can’t return unless he discusses his conduct with administrators first.
George’s mom and attorney disagree with the hairstyle violation. They’ve filed complaints and a lawsuit against Texas officials for not enforcing anti-hairstyle discrimination laws.
According to Barbers Hill High School’s student code of conduct, male students can’t have long hair past eyebrows, ear lobes, or collar. All students’ hair must be neat, geometric, and not an unnatural color. There is no uniform requirement.
