Similar to most things in this world, travel has often been unsafe for black travelers, with many destinations being tailored to Caucasians. This has caused many black individuals to feel isolated, especially in places where they are the minority. As a result, black travel groups have become a common occurrence with organizations creating safe spaces where these travelers can explore the world together.
One of the main benefits to these groups is their emphasis on community. They provide a platform for like-minded people to connect and embark on new adventures. The sense of camaraderie is important, giving travelers support while also reducing the fears for those traveling alone. So, if you’re looking for a group to join, check out some of favorites below:
Black Girls Travel Too
Founded by Danny Rivers-Mitchell, BGTT, empowers black women to explore the world with a spirit of confidence and fearlessness. While highlighting sisterhood and cultural moments, BGTT organizes group trips to various global destinations and create long-lasting bonds amongst travelers. Thanks to Rivers-Mitchell for being “dedicated to imprinting new jet-setting generational cycles among the black community,” BGTT has grown in massive ways, raking in over 100,000 followers on Instagram. Nevertheless, BGTT promises to “breathe life into black women.”
Nomadness Travel Tribe
For our solo travelers seeking international travel experiences, Nomadness is the organization to join. This vibrant community, founded by Evita Robinson, unites a mixture of travelers of color while promoting cultural exchanges and shared journeys. Through meetups and carefully curated trips, Nomadness is known to highlight African and African diaspora cultures. Their vacations to places such as Senegal and Morocco provide members with chance to interact with local communities and experience diverse black culture.
Black Travelers International
BTI has made its mark when it comes to promoting inclusivity and representation within the travel industry. Putting a focus on black singles through their Ultimate Black Single’s Travel Group, BTI offers fresh travel experiences that empower and connect their members. As a minority and woman-owned company, BTI aims to strength personal and professional networks, help members explore their ancestral roots, and even find potential new homes across the world. Urban Events Global
Since 2011, founder Kevin Knight has crafted a dynamic travel community that creates memorable moments that are customized specifically for black travelers. UEG delivers an array of adventures and events that range from urban getaways to international explorations. Known for their Urban Camp Weekend, Urban Cruise Weekend, Urban Excursions, and its annual UEG Meet Up, the organization is all about making sure its members have a joyous time through shared experiences including camping, tours, and beach parties.
Buoyant Travel
This innovative group is dedicated to giving unforgettable travel experiences that cater to various interests of black travelers. According to its website, Buoyant says the organization “exist to help connect our people with cool across the diaspora” aged 25-40, however all ages are welcome. Their unique itineraries feature everything from luxury retreats and cultural tours, that encourage travelers to step out of their comfort zone in refreshing ways. Outside of traveling across borders, Buoyant hosts meet-ups, run a private member club called We Out Here, and create thrilling itineraries.
