On Wednesday, Sony announced its decision to release a new and improved version of its first and most iconic PlayStation console, rebranding it as the PlayStation Classic.
With the re-release of the retro design, Sony has revealed the new console will serve as a miniature version of the original, retailed for $99.99 – set for release in December.
The PlayStation classic will come pre-loaded with 20 retro, “generation-defining” games, including “Final Fantasy VII” and “Tekken 3,” as it eliminates the need for a disc.
Sony’s move comes just two years after the relaunch of the Nintendo’s NES Classic, which was a smaller version of the brand’s 1985 classic Entertainment System. The new console sold out in stores and quickly hit resale for almost eight times its original price. Now, Sony hopes to achieve similar success.
