The rap game is thriving with fiery competitions, and the heat has been intense for some rappers, especially Drake. However, amid the chaos, Memphis rapper BlocBoy JB has entered the chat to defend the person he says helped him on his road to fame.
In a recent social media post, BlocBoy made it clear whose side he’s on.
“I’ll never switch sides on anybody that helped me. This rap game different. N***as will fake f**k wit ya for da moment just cuz it’s beneficial. I’ll never switch up on da [owl emoji]. Ion give AF wat cuh do,” he wrote on his Instagram Story, referencing Drake, who uses the owl to symbolize his OVO brand.
BlocBoy’s loyalty to Drake stems from their major collaboration that skyrocketed the rapper’s career. In 2018, the two teamed up for the smash hit “Look Alive,” a moment that BlocBoy says was surreal.
“OK, so, he had posted the song [on Instagram], and as soon as he posted it, I had replied 100,” BlocBoy recalled during an interview with The Fader in February 2018. “And then he was like, ‘My favorite rapper! We gotta cook.’ As soon as I said, ‘OK,’ he called me. And then the next day, he sent me his part of the song.”
He continued, “He knew my producer [Tay Keith] already, so he was already talking to him. He got the beat from him and sent it to me early in the morning. I jumped straight up and went to the studio. Then, about two or three days later, he was in the city, and we shot the video. It still seems fake, like a dream. I could pinch myself and not feel it.”
“Look Alive” currently has 395 million views on YouTube. The single is five times platinum.
