Middle Georgia officials say an early morning boat crash left one man dead and six people injured.
The accident happened Saturday around 2 a.m. at Sandy Beach on Lake Tobesofkee and involved two boats.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed a cigarette boat with two people crashed with a pontoon boat carrying seven people.
All the riders on the pontoon were hurt, two of them were transported to a nearby hospital with skull fractures, Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones told WMAZ. One of the victims died of his injuries, and a woman remains in critical condition.
William Childs, 22, was the man killed in the tragic accident, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The two people aboard the cigarette boat left the scene. However, they were eventually found at a nearby home. According to DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon, the boat’s driver is believed to have been under the influence at the time of the accident.
At this time, no arrests have been made. An investigation is ongoing to determine exactly what happened, which could take two to three months.
