Donisha Prendergast, granddaughter of reggae legend Bob Marley, has found herself in the middle of a racial incident, threatening legal action after she and her friends were bum rushed by police as they left an Airbnb.

It all started after officials received a 911 call about a possible burglary involving three black people and a white lady. Shortly after the call, police were on the scene, swarming Prendergast and her friends as they left their Airbnb in Southern California.

The group had been renting the home in the area for a music festival. However, as they left the home a neighbor in the white neighborhood waved at the group, but they failed to respond, which prompted the woman to phone officials.

After 22 minutes in detention, police
confirmed the group’s story and let them go. Meanwhile, Prendergast shared the incident with her followers on Instagram, writing, “Got surrounded by the police for being black in a white neighborhood.”

“I’m sad and irritated to see that fear is still the first place police officers go in their pursuit to serve and protect, to the point that protocol supersedes their ability to have discernment. Many have suffered and died in moments like these. That’s a crazy reality check. Give Thanks for live, and the ability to stand our ground. We are stronger together. Use your voice collectively.”

The day after the incident, Rialto police released body cam footage of the encounter, as well as the follow-up audio with the 911 caller.

“I wasn’t being nosey,” the caller said. “I was just being observant,” she continued as she claimed race was not a factor in her phone call. In fact, she claimed the neighborhood had a “rash of burglaries over the last few months,” which sparked her suspicion.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for the owner of the home, she weighed in as well and defending the officers for their actions. She even defended the neighbor for calling the cops, saying “I don’t blame her.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Strange vehicle, strange people, in a suburban neighborhood, and they’re not friendly. She called the police, and I don’t blame her,” Marie Rodriguez said, adding that they were the first guests she hosted.

Regardless though, Prendergast is looking to take legal action against the Rialto Police Department for the incident.
