Bobby Shmurda has been out of jail for over a year and is reflecting on some of the wildest experiences since being out.Â
Shmurda, whose real name is Ackquille Pollard, was released from jail in February 2021, and his good friend Quavo actually picked him up. He was sentenced to six years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder and weapons possession in 2014. Though six years was a long time, it seems like he was never away, as his career has been consistent. After his release, he signed his deal with Epic Records but “just got out of it three months ago.”Â
Variety sat down with the rapper to talk about his craziest moments, in which he responded, “I don’t know if it’s the riots or the sex on the visits. I got oral sex, didn’t get sex sex. I’m too big to be doing all that other shit, ya understand?”Â
In addition to the sex visits, he confessed that correctional officers would see the sex. He said, “I mean, sometimes. Some of them wouldn’t care, they’d be like.” Then some would care. Besides sex, there was nothing else to do but smoke weed, he later said in the interview.Â
He said jail was much better than the psych ward he had to go to when he was 16. “Jail, you smoke weed, get head on visits and sh*t, you good,” versus the psych ward that he tried to burn down when he was 16 or 17.Â
Though the rapper is out, he did say that he sometimes felt defeated. “All the times when I was fighting police, that’s when I felt defeated. I didn’t feel defeated… well, defeated, yeah. Because when I fight police, I used to be on some ‘f*ck everything’ sh*t. When someone makes me errrr, I want to hurt somebody. Those days, yeah, I felt defeated.”Â
As for the most important lesson he learned behind bars, “Don’t take nothing for granted. You could be here one day and dead the next day. Anything you want to do, make sure you do it.”Â
The rapper is currently helping his dad with his case, as he was sentenced to 120 years in prison. Shmurda claims it’s “sh*t he ain’t do.”
He’s also dropping new music as an independent artist with an EP coming out and an album.Â
