Newly released body camera footage shows Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill being detained by Miami-Dade police officers after a traffic stop near Hard Rock Stadium. Hill, who was pulled over for speeding, was removed from his vehicle, restrained, and briefly placed in handcuffs during the encounter.
The video captures the officer approaching Hill’s car and knocking on the window, prompting Hill to partially roll the car down and hand over his driver’s license. Hill requested that the officer not knock on his window. Later, he explained that he wanted to avoid being recognized by onlookers.
However, the officer repeatedly asked Hill to keep his window down, which he resisted by rolling it back up. When Hill did not comply, the officer warned him that he would have to get out of the car. Hill eventually agreed to exit, but the situation escalated when he didn’t move quickly enough for the officers.
As Hill began to get out of the vehicle, another officer assisted by pulling him out and guiding him to the ground to handcuff him. Hill was briefly held down by an officer who expressed frustration over Hill’s lack of compliance. Hill mentioned he had a recent knee surgery, which he said made it difficult to sit on the ground as requested. The officer was skeptical of the claim, asking if he had also had “surgery on your ears.”
Other Dolphins players, including Jonnu Smith and Calais Campbell, arrived separately at the scene and were asked by officers to keep their distance.
Hill was released after about 25 minutes, once Dolphins security and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, arrived. While speaking with NBC News later, Hill expressed concern about the situation and how it could have unfolded differently if he weren’t a known athlete.
The Dolphins issued a statement following the release of the footage, expressing disappointment over the handling of the situation and urging for appropriate measures to be taken. They emphasized their continued support for Hill and their players.
The South Florida Police Benevolent Association released a separate statement, suggesting Hill was initially uncooperative, which led to the actions taken by the officers. They stated that Hill’s compliance could have resolved the situation more smoothly.
