A longtime Boston Radio host quit after being told not to joke about Demi Lovato announcing that they are non-binary.
On Wednesday, Lovato told the world they are non-binary in a heartfelt message to fans and supporters. “I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression, and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering,” the singer said. She added they’d now like to be referred to with the pronouns “they,” “their,” and “them.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Boston Radio host Matty Siegel, co-host of the “Matty in the Morning” show on WXKS-FM radio, abruptly quit after station management told him to stop making jokes about Lovato’s news. “I am the biggest of all time. And they said, ‘Shut up, Matt. Stop talking.’ Well, I hope you’re happy because I just stopped talking. Matty out,” he said at the end of his rant.
Before this incident, the 71-year-old said he was told to stop talking and making jokes about Donald Trump. But, he says the comments are all made in jest. “Today I had the exact opposite. I was going against the ‘woke thing,’ OK? Against the Demi Lovatos of the world and all that kind of stuff,” he said. WXKS general manager Alan Chartrand told The Boston Globe that “everything is going to be fine” and that he plans to meet with Siegel to resolve the issue, Billboard reports.
“This isn’t the first time he’s threatened this would be the last show,” Chartrand said.
