The boxing world is currently in the middle of heated exchanges between Claressa Shields and Laila Ali. What started as a mentor-mentee situation, quickly transformed into a public feud with neither woman backing down.

The situation unfolded during a recent interview when Ali opened up about the reason for her strained relationship with Shields. Ali revealed that Shields initially reached out to her to gain mentorship and career advice. However, things turned sour when Shields allegedly began questioning Ali’s legacy in boxing.
“You can think you can beat me,” Ali said while acknowledging Shields’ confidence. “That’s fine. You’re supposed to think that. But to start going in on my legacy, what I have and haven’t done… that’s a lot.”
Back in 2019, Ali sat down with “Sway’s Universe” and stated that she believed Shields could not defeat her in a boxing match. Of course, Shields caught wind of the conversation and offered to set up a match with Ali to prove her wrong. While the fight might not have happened, Ali maintained that she had no issue with Shields but made it clear that the 29-year-old has a recurring problem in the industry.
Now, of course, Shields isn’t the one to shy away from a fight or an argument so it didn’t take long for her to respond to Ali and her claims. In a five-minute video, Shields took a moment to accuse Ali of being “jealous” of her and criticized the advice she attempted to extend.
“I’ve been come to terms that she’s jealous,” Shields said. “Now, I got the biopic. I got the fight coming up. She act like I owe her something, it’s weird.”
Shields went on to address Ali claiming that her attitude and behavior will hold her back from being successful, which the boxer found interesting due to the amount of strides she has already made.
“I’m trying to figure out why when it comes to me, here she comes. Today she really offended me. She said burning bridges and if I keep burning bridges, I won’t get very far,” Shields said. “I’ve gotten further in my career and in my life than Laila Ali.”
She continued, “She wanna come and give this big sister advice…but I’ve already made it further than you…and I’m going to keep making it further than you.”
Nonetheless, as of now, it’s unclear if these ladies will ever get on the same page but with Ali being a trailblazer in women’s boxing and Shields dubbing herself as the “GWOT,” this clash of giants is putting the boxing community in a difficult spot.
“This is my era now, and she has never supported me in my era,” Shields added.
