Hurricane Helene poses a serious threat to Florida, and as it inches closer to making landfall in the Sunshine State, it’s crucial to be prepared.
Helene is churning towards Florida’s Gulf Coast and the state’s Big Bend. Just a month after Hurricane Debby battered parts of the state, forecasters project Helene will make landfall as a major hurricane. Winds are expected to exceed 111 mph. Evacuation orders have been issued in several counties, which can be found at floridadisaster.org/evacuation-orders.
Authorities are urging residents to finalize preparations and follow evacuation orders for their safety. While most lifelong Floridians have endured powerful storms, many who aren’t from the state may be a bit panicked and unaware of what to expect. Whether you’re evacuating or not, here’s a checklist to help everyone prepare for hours of possible strong weather.
Here’s a checklist to prepare:
- Stock up on water and non-perishable food items, at least three to five days worth
- Flashlights with extra batteries
- Ensure you have a stocked first-aid kit
- Place all important documents in a waterproof container
- Grab cash from an ATM ahead of the storm, if possible
- Make sure your car’s gas tank is filled up
- Gather plenty of non-perishable pet food
- Pack a bag with at least three days worth of clean, comfortable clothing
- Have an evacuation plan. Know where you will go if you have to leave abruptly
