Sonja Norwood, the mother of Brandy and Ray J, is currently recuperating following a hospitalization due to an adverse reaction during an at-home IV hydration session.
According to TMZ, Norwood was swiftly taken to the hospital after undergoing IV therapy, a treatment method that administers vital vitamins and nutrients directly into the bloodstream. She was undergoing an IV infusion containing a combination of vitamins B and C, along with calcium and magnesium. Although this therapy is used to address health issues, it’s important to note that it can have potential side effects such as infections, skin rashes, blood clots, air embolisms, and more.
It appears that things took a turn for the worse during Norwood’s treatment when she began to feel dizzy and had episodes of rapid breathing. Fortunately, after being promptly taken to the hospital, Norwood’s condition stabilized, and everything returned to normal.
Back in 2018, Kendall Jenner ended up in the hospital due to an unfavorable response to IV therapy. Dr. Travis Stork, the host of “The Doctors” and an emergency room physician, pointed out that the trend of IV therapy had gained popularity in Hollywood as a solution for severe hangovers. Even prior to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, celebrities were already turning to IV hydration because of its combination of B vitamins, vitamin C, and magnesium. However, with the proliferation of private businesses offering at-home IV hydration, Stork cautions that not all of these treatments have received FDA approval.
“More serious complications of an IV treatment can include a blood clot or inflammation of the vein. Although very rare, improperly inserted IVs can create a stroke-causing air embolism or cause the fluids to leak into nearby tissue. Additionally, some vitamins in large doses can be toxic,” he said.
