Brandy agreed to a settlement deal with her former housekeeper, who sued her for several employment law violations.
Earlier this year, 60-year-old Maria Elizabeth Castaneda filed a lawsuit against Brandy after her termination. For 20 years, Castaneda maintained the singer’s cooking, cleaning and laundry. However, in February, Castaneda was allegedly fired, which she says was due to her age.
In addition, Castaneda claims Brandy violated California state employment laws, including rules related to state-mandated breaks, meal periods, and overtime.
The singer’s attorneys stated the laws did not apply to Brandy because she employs less than five people. They also told the courts that Castaneda voluntarily quit.
Castaneda originally asked for $250,000 in compensatory damages, $250,000 in general damages, $97,500 in consequential damages, and over $54,000 in attorneys fees.
Nevertheless, the two women settled their issue for $40,000, but unfortunately, the case didn’t end there. Castaneda’s attorneys are seeking over $40,000 from the singer, claiming that Brandy agreed to cover Castaneda’s attorney costs as part of the settlement.
The final cost will be determined by the courts in a hearing scheduled for December 8th.
