Atlanta Braves baseball player Marcell Ozuna has been released on a $20,000 bond after being arrested on charges of aggravated assault by strangulation and battery against his wife.
On Saturday, Ozuna was jailed after police say they witnessed him attacking his wife, Genesis. ESPN reports that police arrived at Ozuna’s Atlanta Sandy Springs home after receiving a 911 call.
Police said in a statement that when they arrived at Ozuna’s home, the door was open, and when they entered, they heard screams coming from inside. Police said they saw Ozuna grab his wife by the neck and throw her against the wall. Officers said they also witnessed him strike his wife with a cast on his injured left hand. Police said Genesis had visible injuries, but she was not taken to the hospital.
When Ozuna first appeared in Fulton County Magistrate Court, he was ordered to no longer contact his wife. ESPN reports Ozuna was expected to be released from jail on Monday. According to court attorneys, the couple is in the process of getting a divorce. A year ago, Genesis was arrested on a domestic violence charge.
The MLB is currently looking into the matter. ESPN reports Ozuna could be looking at a lengthy suspension.
