On Wednesday, the Miami Dolphins decided to part ways with former team MVP Brent Grimes after three seasons. The 32-year-old veteran cornerback is now a free agent and is looking for another NFL team to pick him up.
Grimes had a successful stint with the Dolphins, racking up 166 tackles, 13 interceptions, 43 passes defended, and 2 defensive touchdowns during his time there, and he also made the Pro Bowl all three years. So why would the Dolphins let him go? Yes, to free up cap space, but according to NFL sources, there’s one other reason. “Miko Grimes was primarily the reason why the Dolphins asked Grimes to take a pay cut and ultimately cut him,” Bleacher Report’s NFL Insider Jason Cole says. “Miko Grimes has made threats toward reporters and did again on Wednesday after her husband was cut.”
On top of going off on Dolphins reporters, she also made things real awkward between her husband and quarterback Ryan Tannehill this past season after making Tannehill the subject of one of her Twitter rants. “I knew this QB stunk the minute we signed to this team but I tried to keep quiet so I didn’t discourage bae from believing in his team”, she previously wrote. So needless to say, the Dolphins didn’t think Grimes was worth the drama that comes with keeping him on their roster.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, it seems like Miko’s antics may have gotten her husband blackballed from at least three other NFL teams. NFL Insider Jason Cole goes on to say that three NFL general managers specifically said that they would not sign Grimes because of his wife’s behavior. The Miami Herald also reports that the Dolphins wanted to trade Grimes at first, but were having trouble finding teams who wanted him, so they ended up releasing him.
Grimes still has some gas left in the tank and he could definitely add value to a team who is lacking on defense, so in all reality, it probably won’t be too long before he finds another job. But by now, the whole league knows that if they sign him, they are getting a two-for-one deal.
So which team will be the next to pick up Brent Grimes?
