Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend Kenneth Walker says he is “devastated” by the Kentucky grand jury’s decision not to indict any of the police involved in the fatal shooting of Taylor, and says he believes he is being wrongfully blamed for Taylor’s murder.
After Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced the grand jury’s decision, he claimed Sgt. Jonathan Mattingly and Detective Myles Cosgrove, the officers who fired at Taylor, were justified in using force to protect themselves because Walker fired at them first. Officers entered the home of Taylor on March 13, allegedly without her or Walker’s knowledge, executing a search warrant in a narcotics investigation. Thinking that the officers were intruders, Walker fired one shot at the officers.
Frederick Moore III, a lawyer representing Walker, said he believes Cameron blamed Walker for Taylor’s murder during a news conference on Wednesday. Walker was initially arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault, but the charges were later dropped, NBC News reports. #BrettHankison, one of the main officers involved in the incident, was charged with three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment over endangering three of Taylor’s neighbors. The outlet reports that Hankison’s charges did not include him firing at or killing Taylor.
Hankison was fired back in June, and in his termination letter, he stated that he had an extreme indifference to the value of human life” and that he “wantonly and blindly” fired 10 shots during the execution of the search warrant, NBC News reports. None of the rounds Hankison fired hit Taylor, Cosgrove’s did. Walker, who is licensed to carry, only fired off one shot.
At this point, officials are still trying to confirm whether or not authorities properly “knocked and identified themselves.” One neighbor said they heard police announcing they were there. But Moore says that evidence is “inconsistent with what we know,” saying that only one person out of a dozen neighbors interviewed said they heard police announce themselves by saying “police” one time. Moore went on to say that he felt Cameron seemed to feel biased toward the officers during the press conference. “My problem is, he’s talked for months about finding the truth, then he bloviates that there are going to be people from the outside telling us about this case. He got in front of the entire world yesterday and told part of the truth. It’s hypocritical,” said Moore.
Moore’s words are in reference to Cameron’s comments about celebs, influencers, and activists allegedly being a group that force-feeds the masses into believing their own ideas about a situation. “There will be celebrities, influencers, and activists, who, having never lived in Kentucky, will try to tell us how to feel, suggesting they understand the facts of this case and that they know our community and the commonwealth better than we do. But they don’t. Let’s not give in to their attempts to influence our thinking or capture our emotions,” said Cameron.
Moore is calling for Cameron to release as much of the evidence in the case. “Say what all the evidence shows. Don’t only say what helps your case. He presented an affirmative defense to the grand jury. He stood up there yesterday and acted like a criminal defense lawyer,” said Moore.
