Fans in Detroit have taken a strong stance against Brian McKnight following disparaging remarks he made about his biological children. The artist’s concert, scheduled for June 9 at the MotorCity Casino Hotel, was canceled on May 3. The decision came in response to McKnight’s controversial statements, where he referred to his children from previous relationships as a “product of sin” and “evil.”
The backlash began when McKnight, who is part of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, made these remarks during a live social media session with fans. He specifically did not acknowledge his biological daughter Briana, calling her “illegitimate.”
In a separate post, McKnight praised his stepdaughter Julia for graduating, referring to her as his “one and only daughter.” This drew criticism since McKnight has several children, including Brian Jr. and Niko from his first marriage to Julie McKnight, Briana from a previous relationship, and two stepchildren, Julia and Jack. He also has a toddler, Brian Kainoa Makoa McKnight Jr., from his current marriage. McKnight defended Julia, saying she “understands the scriptures” and quoting Exodus 20:12: “Honor your father and your mother.”
When the Detroit venue promoted McKnight’s show on Facebook, fans expressed their disapproval. Comments ranged from “Wouldn’t even go for free” to “Sir, absolutely not.” Some suggested McKnight should make amends with his children before they would consider attending, while others mocked the timing, questioning if the show was scheduled for Father’s Day weekend.
Many fans felt McKnight canceled himself by mistreating his children.
