Britney Spears can now select her own attorney to represent her in her ongoing conservatorship case.
This will be the first time since 2008 that she has had a voice in her own legal representation.
In a court filing earlier this week, Spears’ court-appointed counsel, Samuel Ingham, formally wanted to resign, but the decision needed to be approved by a California judge.
Yesterday, Judge Brenda Penny accepted Ingham’s resignation and approved Spears’ choice of a new attorney, Hollywood lawyer Mathew Rosengart.
Rosengart made his first public statement outside of the hearing, urging Spears’ father Jamie to resign as her conservator.
“Jamie Spears should be removed as conservator because it is in [the] best interest of the conservatee,” said Rosengart. “We will be moving promptly and aggressively for his removal. The question remains, why is he involved? He should step down voluntarily because that’s what’s in the best interest of the conservatee.”
Spears’ testimony was described as “clear, lucid, powerful, and compelling” by Rosengart, who praised her “courage, passion, and humanity” for speaking out in court. He added, “My firm and I will be taking a top to bottom look at what’s happened over the past decade.”
During the hearing, an emotional Spears talked to the Los Angeles judge about her case. According to reports, Spears requested that her estranged father, Jamie Spears, be charged with conservatorship abuse.
“I would like to charge my father with conservatorship abuse,” said Spears. “I want to press charges against my father today,” she added. “I want an investigation into my dad.”
Outside the courthouse on Wednesday, US Representative Matt Gaetz appeared with Spears supporters, stating Jamie Spears, “He should not be making any more decisions affecting his daughter. She is nearly 40 years old.”
