A Texas teen was arrested on a murder charge after he told police his unwed pregnant sister was an “embarrassment to their family.”
A week ago, 23-year-old Virdiana Arevalo was reported missing by her boyfriend in The Colony, Texas. According to reports, the family found a note she left behind that claimed she wanted to kill herself.
But, on Monday, the Colony police announced that her 19-year-old brother Eduardo Arevalo was facing a capital murder charge after Virdiana’s body was found in an alley on Sunday.
Police said the teen told detectives the reason he killed his sister was because she was an “embarrassment to their family,” and the teen added that “it would be better off that she wasn’t here,” Fox 4 Dallas reported. Virdiana was eight months pregnant.
Sgt. Aaron Woodard of The Colony Police Department stated in a news conference, “It’s not what our officers and detectives wanted to be dealing with two days before Christmas.”
Along with confessing he murdered his sister, Police said that Arevalo also admitted to strangling her and to writing the suicide note found by the family.
He said he put the body in the trunk of his car, and after an hour-long drive, he ditched the body in a remote spot out of town, Fox 4 reported.
“As the week went on, Eduardo stated that he wanted his family to know where Viri was so he went and picked up her body and brought her back Sunday morning in the early morning hours and dumped her body in the alleyway,” Woodward said, according to the news station.
After the body’s discovery, police were then called to the scene to investigate.
Arevalo then became a suspect in the case after detectives saw him on surveillance video from the alley, according to a police news release.
