Usually, it’s the players that are the ones getting in trouble. Well, this time, a NFL coach is finding himself in hot water after allegedly getting in an altercation with his fiancée. Over the weekend, police showed up at the Berea, Ohio home of Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Andy Moeller after a 911 call was placed by a woman named Sandy claiming that Moeller had assaulted her. When the cops arrived, she had already left his house and was waiting on a nearby street. After giving her side of the story to the police, she was taken to her hotel. Later that night, she decided to officially press charges against Moeller only to change her mind and drop the charges a few hours later. However, it is now in the hands of the prosecutors, who are still in the process of investigating before deciding whether or not to charge Moeller.
According to the 911 call that has since been released, Sandy, who claims to be Moeller’s fiancée, said she was visiting from Maryland when an argument started between the two of them. She said it began out of nowhere after he yelled at her to “shut up” while she was on the phone with her son. It quickly escalated to the point where Moeller tried to strangle her and beat her up and she had to escape. While talking to the operator, she also said that Moeller had been drinking and she admitted that it wasn’t the first time he put his hands on her.
The Browns made the decision to suspend Moeller indefinitely the following Monday. In a press release, the team stated, “Over the weekend, Andy was involved in an incident, involving allegations that we take very seriously. We have followed our internal protocol, determining that right now it is best for the team and for Andy to take time away from the organization to focus on his personal matters. We are going to respect the process of investigation on this personal matter and will have no further comment at this time.” Assistant offensive line coach George DeLeone and senior offensive assistant coach Kurt Roperwill fill in for Moeller for the time being.
Right now, it’s a he said-she said situation as no obvious injuries were found on the victim when the police showed up. But to her credit, she did sound extremely shaken up and scared while on the phone with the 911 operator. It also wouldn’t be the first time Moeller got in trouble after drinking too much. Only time will tell whether or not Moeller will be heading to court. However, whether or not he gets charged, there’s a pretty good chance that he can kiss his career with the Browns goodbye.
