In a shocking development for some, quarterback Bryce Young has been benched by the Carolina Panthers going into week three.
The second-year player from Philadelphia came into this season hoping to put last year behind him and pivot. So far this season, Young has completed 21 of the 44 passes he has attempted for 245 yards. Yesterday, Young was asked to pass the ball 14 times in the entire game, but the passing game was not productive enough.
When head coach Dave Canales was asked if Andy Dalton could potentially start week three, he reassured that Bryce Young was their guy. However, this news makes it seem different.
“Bryce is our quarterback,” Canales told the media after the 20-3 loss yesterday. “We’re gonna just continue to shore up and fix the thing we need to fundamentally from a scheme standpoint. All those things are, these are valuable reps. These are all valuable games. We’ll learn a lot from his game, and hopefully, we’ll take another step this week.”

Canales’ development of Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield was a key reason he was hired in Carolina. Unfortunately, he has not been able to show his skills so far with Young. When speaking with the media today, Canales said that after watching a film, he had a conversation with management and decided to bench Young. The steps being taken are unconventional; however, maybe Young needs a minute to reaccess and not feel the pressure of starting Sunday.

Once a consistent starter for the Cincinnati Bengals, quarterback Andy Dalton will fill in for Young this upcoming week. Some analysts have complained that the roster around Young has not helped him move in a successful direction. However, if Dalton can make a win or even more than 10 points, then there may be a cause for concern for Young and his future with the Panthers.
A team that will likely have a top-three pick this upcoming draft, will they decide to start over and use another number-one pick on a quarterback? It is not out of the realm of possibilities after this development. Conflicting reactions have been seen on Twitter, with some coming to the defense of Young. Others understand that Carolina does not have time to waste, so this season is somewhat salvageable.
Check out some tweets below of the reactions to Young’s first two weeks of play.
this was the worst Bryce Young play of Week 2
3rd and 7 – this has to be a climb. Not an exit out of the back and run into a sack.

Two things can be true
1 – Bryce Young was a talented prospect that (although with obvious flaws) could’ve been a starting NFL QB
2 – The Panthers are the single worst QB situation to go to since maybe ever

Keep your head up Bryce Young. Life is a lot longer than this moment. https://t.co/DHW51FDgrL
