The suspect accused of fatally shooting ten people and injuring three more at a Buffalo Tops reportedly posted a manifesto that outlined his plans to kill Black people. NBC News reports that it referred to the “great replacement” theory repeatedly.
Payton Gendron, 18, allegedly made multiple mentions of the theory, which is the false idea that a secret political faction is trying to replace white Americans through interracial marriage, immigration, and eventually through violence.
The 180-page manifesto appears to match several key details of the shooting suspect, including the same birth date and biographical details. Investigators are still waiting to get a computer that belonged to Gendron, according to The New York Post.
He detailed his plans for the attack, writing that he chose the Buffalo Tops grocery store because “it has the highest Black population percentage” by zip code. He also noted that it was not that far from where he lived in Conklin.
In the manifesto, Gendron admits to being radicalized online while being “bored” during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The self-proclaimed white supremacist and anti-Semite repeatedly cites Brenton Tarrant. Tarrant killed 51 people and injured 40 more during a mass shooting in a New Zealand mosque in 2019.
“We are aware of the manifesto allegedly written by the suspect, and we’re working to definitively confirm that he is the author,” a law enforcement official told NBC News.
Police say Gendron drove several hours from where he lived to the Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo. Wearing tactical gear, he began his shooting spree in the parking lot before moving inside the store. Gendron live-streamed the attack, as Tarrant did in 2019.
Gendron was taken into custody by Buffalo police after he shot 13 people, including 11 Black victims and two white victims. Ten people were killed, and three suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
He is being held without bail.
