Burger King has issued an official apology for its Pride Burger following backlash.
Last week, Burger King was making headlines after debuting its Pride-inspired burger, the Pride Whopper, which has “two equal buns” — either two tops or two bottoms. The move from the company didn’t sit too well with some folks, and the burger joint started to be insulted by critics of the burger.
“Burger King Austria is selling a silly Pride Whopper featuring “two tops” or “two bottoms” / LGBTQ Nation,” said one Twitter user of the campaign.
It didn’t take long for Burger King to catch wind of the heat. In response to the backlash. Jung von Matt Donau, the agency that worked on the campaign with Burger King, addressed the issue in a LinkedIn post, saying the company “didn’t check well enough with community members on different interpretations of the Pride Whopper.”
“The intended message of the Pride Whopper was to spread equal love and equal rights,” reads the post.” Our strongest concern is if we offended members of the LGBTQ Community with this campaign. If this is the case, we truly apologize.”
“We’ve learned our lessons and will include experts on communicating with the LGBTQ community for future work as promoting equal love and equal rights will still be a priority for us,” the post continues.
