On Monday afternoon, a school bus filled with 35 elementary school students crashed into a tree and split in half, killing at least six children, reports state. This morning, the driver of the bus, Johnthony Walker, 24, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
According to CNN, officials received a call about the crash around 3:30 pm. One of the children, that had been removed from the bus, told reporters that the bus driver was going “real fast” before he hit a garbage bag. Afterwards, the driver ran into a mailbox, then the bus flipped over and slammed into a tree. Parents of the children rushed to the scene. Witnesses say, the parents could be seen searching franticly for their children, others could be heard crying and screaming. At least five children died at the site, and one died at the hospital, reports state.
As the case proceeds, Walker could face additional charges. Sources say, he has been cooperative, so far throughout the investigation.
In the meantime, district schools will be open on Tuesday, in light of the tragedy. However, officials will provide support and comfort for staff and students who need it.
