The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Wednesday that Butterball is issuing a voluntary recall on its ground turkey products. The company cited possible plastic contamination as the reason for the recall.

According to the agency, Butterball recalls “approximately 14,107 pounds of ground turkey products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically blue plastic.” Both Butterball and the FSIS received customer complaints about finding pieces of blue plastic in ground turkey. No injuries were reported.

The affected products were produced on September 28 and were sold nationwide at BJ’s and Kroger’s locations. They include the 2.5-lb tray containing “farm to family BUTTERBALL all-natural Ground Turkey” as well as 3-lb. tray containing “Kroger GROUND TURKEY.”

Both of the affected Butterball products have the same case code, 50211271.

“No other Butterball products are included in this recall,” the company said in a statement.

If you have any of these products, they should be thrown away or returned at the store where it was purchased. Any consumer with questions can contact Butterball at (800) 288-8372 or the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-MPHotline.
