“I’m in! California is worth fighting for,” tweeted Caitlyn Jenner as she announced the news that she’s running for governor.
Jenner officially filed paperwork to run for governor of California and said that a formal announcement would be made in the coming weeks.
If a recall election is held this year, she and others who have launched campaigns will face Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.
“I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor,” Jenner wrote in her announcement. “Californians want better and deserve better from their governor. For too long, career politicians have over-promised and under-delivered.”
Jenner claims that the “overly restrictive lockdown” has harmed small businesses and that taxes are too high, “killing jobs, hurting families, and putting an especially heavy burden on our most vulnerable people.”
She said, “This isn’t the California we know. This is Gavin Newsom’s California, where he orders us to stay home but goes out to dinner with his lobbyist friends.”
In a People magazine interview last year, the celebrity activist described herself as “economically conservative, socially progressive,” and she would immediately stand out in a field that has so far struggled to attract a nationally recognized contender. Her possible run will come nearly two decades after the ascension of Arnold Schwarzenegger, another Republican who rose to the state’s highest office in a 2003 recall election thanks to his Hollywood celebrity.
Nonetheless, Jenner’s candidacy has highlighted the many unknowns regarding her views on key issues confronting the nation’s most populous state, ranging from how she will handle the coronavirus pandemic to slowing the homelessness crisis.
Former Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale is assisting Jenner in forming an inner circle, as is longtime Republican strategist Ryan Erwin, a veteran of California and presidential politics who will serve as the campaign’s general consultant; and GOP fundraiser Caroline Wren.
