New Study Confirms California Cities Have the Most Expensive Burger Meals In the U.S.

If you’re looking for a cheeseburger in California, they are everywhere, but it might put a significant dent in your wallet.

A new survey by MoneyGeek, a personal finance technology company, examined menu prices for burger meals across the country, researching sites such as allmenus.com and GrubHub.com to help determine prior and current food costs. They looked at 145 major and independent restaurants that sell burgers, fries, and drink combos in 50 cities. Of the top ten most expensive locations, California cities held four of the top ten spots.

San Francisco had the highest average meal price at large chains, averaging $15.30 for a burger, fries, and beverage. Los Angeles came close behind, with prominent chains charging about $14.59 per burger meal. Long Beach averages about $13.08 per meal, while customers will pay roughly $12.67 in Sacramento. It comes as no surprise that Five Guys is the most expensive burger chain, with patrons paying about $20 for a burger, fries, and beverage.

The study went from 2021 to 2022, and the results can largely be attributed to inflation. Food prices have risen 9% during this timeframe.

Considering that nearly all goods have risen in price, these may be a bit out of your budget. That’s why Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s are serving $2.99 cheeseburgers until October 30th. While it might not be a complete feast, you definitely won’t be paying California prices the next time you’re craving the beefy sandwich.
