Friday’s Supreme Court overturn of Roe v. Wade has been met with a quick response by California Gov. Gavin Newsom and state leaders.
The Supreme Court’s strike down on Roe v. Wade will now prohibit women in more than half of this country’s states from getting an abortion or cause them to face extreme challenges when trying to get one.
“This is what (Senate Minority Leader) Mitch McConnell wanted. This is what (former President) Donald Trump pursued,” Newsom said during a press conference Saturday. “This is the world we currently live in. … This moment just really punctuates what is really going on in this country.”
Newsom signed AB 1666, a legislation that aims at protecting women, doctors, and others who assist with abortions from civil judgment and civil lawsuits by those states where abortions are illegal, CBS News reported.
Newsom also went on social media to defend the right to abortion and introduce his new legislation.
In part, he wrote, “Abortion is legal in California. It will remain that way,” and then added that California will not cooperate with any states that they to prosecute women or doctors for seeking or providing reproductive care.
A true hero.
