California legislators are set to announce a $400 rebate proposal for every taxpayer in the state as gas prices continue to spike.
The proposal was set to be announced Thursday morning on the north steps of the state capitol by a group of assembly members, including Cottie Petrie-Norris, Cecilia Aguiar Curry, Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Jesse Gabriel, Adam Gray, Jacqui Irwin, Evan Low, Chad Mayes, Blanca Rubio, Sharon Quirk-Silva and Carlos Villapudua.
The funding for the rebate would reportedly take up $9 billion of the state’s budget surplus, and taxpayers who don’t own a car would also be eligible.
A release from Petrie-Norris’ office argues that this is a better approach than suspending the gas tax, explaining that it would stifle funding for transportation projects and “offers no guarantee that oil companies would pass on the savings to customers.”
