If we have learned anything during this time, it’s the true colors of people amid the racial tensions in America. It has been not only shocking but eye-opening to witness the ugly truth behind CEOs, politicians, friends, and even family over the past several weeks.
Recently, California Wayside Elementary’s second-grade schoolteacher, Carrie Maxwell, was caught on film, threatening to kill a woman and a young child on June 5. However, she has since come forward to apologize for her actions.
Erika Baze, who is white, told local news KKTV that she and her 8-year-old daughter were leaving a Black Lives Matter Protest for George Floyd in Bakersfield when they were confronted and verbally assaulted by Maxwell. Baze told the outlet that Maxwell said they were not welcome in the area and threatened to call the police.
Baze decided to record the encounter as Maxwell became violent. The woman is heard on video using profanity and telling the two, “I’ll F—— Kill You.” The footage shows Maxwell enraged and dragged away by her husband.
According to the New York Post, Maxwell has released the following statement through her attorney:
“I had seen news coverage of the protest turning into riots across the country and was aware that the protests near my home had turned to confrontations the day before. When I heard protesters gathering near my home, loudly chanting profanities, I became overwhelmed with anxiety and fear.” She also claimed she was overwhelmed by taking care of her autistic son and elderly mother.
“I want to offer my sincerest apology to anyone who was hurt by my behavior in that video,” Maxwell said and added that she is “heartbroken” when she thinks about how her students and their parents will view the video, which she says does not change her “values or views regarding race or inclusivity.”
The incident is under investigation by the Bakersfield City School District. “We do not condone nor endorse the action and behavior captured on the video,” Superintendent Doc Ervin stated.
