California Teen Admits to Killing 16-Year-Old Girl and Her Parents After He Was Caught in Her Bedroom

A California teen was arrested and charged after confessing to killing a 16-year-old girl and her parents after getting caught in the girl’s bedroom.

According to the Humboldt County district attorney, Mauricio Johnson, 19, pled guilty to the triple murder on Tuesday and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.

On February 9th, Johnson shot and killed Nikki Metcalf, 40, Margarett Moon, 40, and Shelly Autumn May Moon in their home on the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria Reservation.

Prosecutors stated the teen entered the home “with the permission of several minors” who lived there.
However, after the rest of the house had gone to bed, stepfather Metcalf entered the girl’s room and discovered the two in bed.
According to a warrant provided by lawandcrime.com, the teens were getting “intimate” when Metcalf slapped Johnson, who then fled the room with his pants down.
Shortly after, the mother was shot in the living room after she was awoken by gunfire. Johnson then shot the 16-year-old girl because “he didn’t want any witnesses.”
Johnson could have been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole if the case had gone to trial, but the DA’s office said in a statement that it took into account several factors, including the fact that “a trial would require testimony from young people who have suffered a tragedy.”
Another factor given was the possibility of changes to California law.

“On the point about California law, youthful offenders all currently receive a parole hearing in their 25th year of incarceration, unless they are serving life without the possibility of parole,” the DA statement said.

“California legislators are seeking to modify the parole eligibility of youthful offenders, so that all would be entitled to a parole hearing regardless of their original sentence. The defendant’s agreed upon sentence would be the maximum sentence he could receive if the law under consideration takes effect.”
