A California woman was shocked to find more than $36,000 in cash hidden in the cushions of a couch she found on Craigslist.Â
Vicky Umodu was browsing the site looking for furniture for her new home when she came across an ad for free furniture. The listing was for a set of sofas and a matching chair.Â
At first, she thought maybe the ad was a gimmick but decided to call anyway. She learned a family was giving away the furniture of a loved one who had recently passed away.Â
“I just moved in, and I don’t have anything in my house. I was so excited, so we picked it up and brought it in,” Umodu told ABC7.
While checking over the furniture, she discovered something strange with one of the cushions. Umodu felt an object inside one of the cushions, and when she removed it, she realized it was several envelopes filled with thousands of dollars.Â
“I was just telling my son, ‘Come, come, come!'” she said. “I was screaming, ‘this is money! I need to call the guy.'”
Umodu gave the money to the family, who explained to her they had found cash hidden in the house, but only a couple hundred dollars. As a thank you, the family gave Umodu $2,200 so she could buy a new refrigerator.Â
“I was not expecting a dime from him; I was not,” Umodu said.
