Goodbye Gasoline! California Votes to Ban the Sale of New Gas-Powered Car By 2035

If you live in California, by 2035, you will no longer be able to purchase a new car powered by gasoline.

Thursday, California air regulators voted to approve a new rule that bans the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

This comes after Gov. Gavin Newsom introduced an executive order called the CARB Advanced Clean Cars II rule, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, CBS News reports.

“Emissions from motor vehicle engines hurt public health, welfare, the environment, and the climate in multiple interrelated ways,” reads a staff report on the new rule. “These emission reductions will help stabilize the climate and reduce the risk of severe drought and wildfire and its consequent fine particulate matter pollution.”

The new mandate will force car makers to phase out gasoline and diesel cars, minivans, pick-up trucks, and SUVs in favor of environmentally-friendly versions that are powered by batteries or fuel cells. It does not ban people from owning and driving gas cars or from selling them on the used market.

Gov. Newsom’s climate advisor Lauren Sanchez said the mission is to “move the state away from oil.”

“This is monumental,” California Air Resources Board member Daniel Sperling told CNN. “This is the most important thing that CARB has done in the last 30 years. It’s important not just for California, but it’s important for the country and the world.”
