Cam Thomas is apologetic after being fined for using a slur during his excited post-game interview.
The 21-year-old has been immersed in drama following Thursday’s game between the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago Bulls. During his excitement over his eventful week, including the stunning 116-105 victory over the Bulls, Thomas made an offensive remark that the LGBTQ+ community had an issue with. When referring to Spencer Dinwiddie’s comments regarding him and Dorian Finney-Smith being the “best looking” trade package to arrive on the Nets, Thomas said, “we already had good-looking guys, no homo.”
The comment was immediately received poorly, leaving the NBA scrambling to get ahead of the backlash. On Friday, the organization announced in a press release that Thomas was being fined $40,000 for using what has been perceived as a homophobic slur. While there were critics of Thomas’ words, fans rallied around him on social media, slamming the NBA for fining him.
Cam Thomas getting fined $40k on a $2m salary is insane. You gotta scale down the fine for players who are making less money. The offense wasn't particularly bad, and he apologized immediately as well. This is harsh.

Cam Thomas used “No homo” to clarify that he is not showing attraction to the same sex— “We been had a group of good looking guys” If the shoe fits, wear it but don't fine the young brother cuz y'all are overly sensitive. Gay rights the only thing that matters ? This is hate and… https://t.co/h2oT8HL15h

Thomas wasted no time issuing an apology, though the damage was already done.
“I was excited about the win and was being playful. I definitely didn’t intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did,” he wrote on Twitter.
I want to apologize for the insensitive word I used in the post-game interview. I was excited about the win and was being playful. I definitely didn't intend to offend anyone, but realize that I probably did. My apologies again. Much love 🫶🏽❤️
