I saw this video over on Necole Bitchie and thought it was worth sharing. A man and his wife appeared on the Steve Harvey Show because his wife’s drastic hair change doesn’t met his approval. When he met his wife she wore a long silky weave and up until recently, she did the big chop and decided to go natural.”We’ve been together nine years. About two, three years ago I decided to go natural. Not on purpose but I had this weave in my hair and the weave went bad. After I cut it all off I no choice but to wear this.[…]The first time he saw it, he ran out the house and then he came back in and asked if it was a wig, if so take it off. He wasn’t very supportive of that, actually.“
Now she has more of a small afro. In his opinion, the style isn’t versatile and there isn’t a lot that she can do with it. It also came as a huge shock to him when she first did it. “Well, I’m over the shock. I understand that natural hair takes time. It takes time to grow out. And like I said, it’s not something that I’m used to, but I just wish there was more styles she could do with it so it could be more appealing. Something different because there’s not many styles she can do with her hair like this so I just tell her that.“
Before watching the video, what do you think the wife could have done differently? Should she have consulted her husband before chopping off her hair? Is he wrong for his reaction to her drastic change? In a way, I see both sides of the coin. A man has been with his wife for 7 years and then out of nowhere she makes a drastic change to her appearance. Hair can change a lot about a person’s appearance. Imagine if you married a guy and he shaved his hair bald and you can’t get over his milk dud shaped head. It’s kind of hard to deal with.
Then there’s the other side of the coin where he should be accepting of his wife’s choices. And for the most part it seems like he accepts that it’s something he can’t change, but that’s it.
