Canada To Reopen Borders For Fully Vaccinated Americans On August 9

As COVID restrictions continue to ease, Canada announced that fully vaccinated Americans would be welcome back across the border beginning August 9. Entry by unvaccinated foreign travelers will not be permitted.

To enter, all US citizens and legal and permanent residents must be fully vaccinated and at least 14 days after their final dose. Our northern neighbor accepts vaccines made by Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and AstraZeneca. Other vaccine manufacturers are not accepted at this time. 

Travelers will need to provide proof of vaccination along with a negative PCR or molecular test within 72 hours. In another policy change, unvaccinated children under age 12 will no longer be required to quarantine if they enter Canada with fully vaccinated parents or guardians.

Canada will further open its borders to fully vaccinated international travelers on September 7.

“As we made decisions around reopening to the world in early September, and to American travelers, a few weeks before that, we kept the American government fully apprised,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

But the American government has declined to comment about whether or not it will reciprocate. COVID-19 restrictions at land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico were extended just last month. They expire Wednesday, with no word on if they will be extended. 

“We are continuing to review our travel restrictions, and any decisions about reopening travel will be guided by our public health and medical experts,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki to reporters.
