A video circulates of a Capitol police officer taking a selfie with a Capitol invader during Wednesday’s riot brought on by Trump supporters there to dismantle democracy.
Apparently, amid the chaos, there was enough time and generosity for a cop to take a picture with a rioter who was part of the massive and violent group.
The now-viral video has caused fury. It’s already upsetting that today’s response by officials is a stark contrast to the response of other “protest”—specifically peaceful Black Lives Matter protests, but to see officers actually pose during an unprecedented “attempted coup” is appalling.
Many people question where was the security on a day that many knew would be controversial. How could such a massive riot happen at America’s most historic landmark, but protests in our neighborhoods get shut down before they start?
Today’s riot came on the heels of a Congress meeting to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s election. The same day, Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock won the Georgia Senate runoff elections, a day Trump and his allies have feared.
Authorities’ “lack” of response and mild interactions with mob members can be described as tame and non-discouraging, as the large group gained entry, roamed the Capitol halls, and became violent. The group was seen in pictures and videos, clashing with police, breaking windows, and at one point, a man was captured carrying a Confederate flag inside.
To make matters worse, amid the chaos, a woman was fatally shot.
Now people want to know where was the pepper spray, tear gas, and other weapons police tend to excessively use when it comes to the anti-racism protests? At least those protests are dealing with life and civil rights, not a temper tantrum throwing, idolized racist bigot.
If today’s riot doesn’t awaken you to the ugly truth of America and race, then you are part of the problem.
This is America.
