Cardi B used her moment at the ASCAP Voice of the Culture Award to check the noise and give her writers their flowers.

The Bronx rapper accepted the honor at a private event in Los Angeles on Sunday and wasted no time pushing back on critics who still trip over songwriting credits.
“I hate the idea that if you don’t write every line on your own, that it makes what you have to say not real,” she said, calling out a mindset that still lingers in certain hip-hop circles. “Music is a collaboration, it has always been. The biggest hits, the greatest records come from teamwork.”
This wasn’t a random clapback. Cardi has been under fire for years from those who believe every rapper needs to be a one-person writing machine. But she made it clear that she is hands-on with her music, and being surrounded by creative minds doesn’t make her less of an artist.
“I speak to what’s true to me,” she continued. “My pen, my mind, my feelings are in every verse and in every hook, and I respect every writer who brings their magic to the table.”
Cardi made sure her team didn’t get lost in the spotlight.
“This award is not just for me. It’s for the culture, for every writer who help shape it and make us feel something. Let’s keep pushing our pens and the power that comes with it.”
In a genre that still argues over who’s “real” and who’s not, Cardi stood firm in her truth: collaboration doesn’t cancel out authenticity. And judging by her catalog, her formula is working just fine.
