If you’ve been using Cash App since 2018, you might be eligible for a portion of a $15 million settlement. This comes after Block Inc., the owner of Cash App, faced accusations of negligence due to two significant data breaches.
In 2022, a former employee accessed account data without permission, affecting around 8.2 million users. This led to a class action lawsuit against Block and Cash App Investing for failing to protect user data. The following year, another incident occurred where an unauthorized user accessed Cash App accounts using recycled phone numbers.
Block has denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle for $15 million.
Who Qualifies for the Settlement?
You might be eligible if:
- You have used Cash App and/or Cash App Investing.
- Your account was accessed without permission.
- There were unauthorized withdrawals or transfers between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024.
How Much Could You Receive?
Eligible users can claim up to $2,500 for out-of-pocket losses linked to data breaches, unauthorized access, or fraudulent transactions. You need to provide third-party documentation to support your claim.
You can also claim up to $75 for lost time (up to three hours at $25 per hour) and additional documented transaction losses.
How to File a Claim
Claims must be submitted by November 18, 2024. You can file online or mail in a printed form. If you don’t want to be part of the settlement or wish to object, you must send a written notice by November 1.
If you don’t opt out, you’re automatically included in the settlement, but you’ll only get paid if you submit a claim.
When Will Payments Be Made?
The final approval hearing is scheduled for December 16, 2024. If the settlement is approved, payments will likely be issued shortly after.
